New Honorary Members – Helen Jenkins and Tom Turner

At the April 11, 2012 Board Meeting, two individuals were given honorary memberships to Genealogy Friends.

The first is Helen Jenkins, who has been a long-time member of Genealogy Friends and supported our organization for many years with her love of family and sharing stories and books she has written. She has donated several books to the library. She no longer lives in the DFW area but has continued to be a strong supporter of Gen Friends.

The second honorary member is Tom Turner. Tom has worked in the genealogy section of the Plano libraries both at Gladys Harrington Library and now at W.O, Haggard, Jr. Library. Tom has supported our group with arranging program rooms for us and assisting us with any help we needed for our seminars.

We are thrilled to honor these two individuals with honorary memberships and thank them for their contribution to history and the genealogy section of the Plano Libraries.

Saturday Seminar – April 21, 2012

The next Saturday Seminar will be on April 21, 2012 at WO Haggard Library, 2501 Coit Rd, Plano, TX. Mary Pfeiffer will be our speaker. This is a hands on workshop on writing memoirs and stories of our ancestors. Join us to learn about writing so you can share your research. After all the hard work you put in doing research it is important that you put it in a format that will live on.

Doors open at 10 am, program begins at 10:30.

Indexing the 1940 Census

The 1940 US Federal Census will be released on April 2, 2012 at 8:00 central time. There is no index. A volunteer indexing project has been organized to create an index so we can all find out ancestors easily. You can volunteer to help. If every genealogist indexed a page or two we would be finished in no time.

There is a workshop on Saturday, March 31st at Haggard Library, 2501 Coit Rd at 10:30 in the Genealogy section to show volunteers how to get ready to index. Here is a link to the handout.
